Zimplats set to write off stolen $2m platinum haul 19th December 2003
Zimbabwe Platinum Mines has acknowledged that it will probably have to write off $2 million from its exports sales sheet following the theft of 56mt of converter matte.
The platinum went missing four months ago when being taken to Impala Platinum's refinery facilities at Rustenburg.
A company official told Platts that no leads have yet surfaced, with the chances of apprehending any of the culprits becoming more and more remote.
'We have not gotten anywhere with this case and we never will,' the Zimplats official commented.
He also expressed concern that the hijacking could be attributed to an inside source.
The case has prompted further disquiet about the security of the platinum industry, coming on the back of government accusations regarding Zimplats officials and smuggling.
Zimplats' platinum matte is regarded as among of the highest grade in the world, boasting the highest value of any platinum concentrate.
Zimplats platinum matte is said to be of high grade with a concentration of 1,400g/mt, one of the highest valued platinum concentrate produced.
