Zimplats row rumbles on 8th November 2005

Platinum miner Zimplats and the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) remain gridlocked in their efforts to resolve their tax dispute.

Zimra has so far refused to back down in its claims that it is owed over $2.5 million in non-resident taxes from the miner, while Zimplats insists its deal with former mining ministers remains in force and means that it does not have to pay the money.

In an announcement to its shareholders, Zimplats revealed that the matter is still being discussed and insisted it "remains convinced" that the government will honour the previous arrangement that the company had with the mining ministers.

It had been claimed earlier in the year that Zimplats' parent company Implats was considering pulling out of Zimbabwe altogether because of the dispute, but a spokesman for the company quickly denied the rumours.

Last month, Zimplats announced a 27 per cent growth in profits during the third quarter, largely thanks to the devalued Zimbabwean dollar and continued high platinum prices.
