Zimplats resumes 15th June 2004

Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Zimplats) has announced that "limited mining activities" are underway at its Ngezi project after a series of stoppages.

Workers at the Ngezi site have become embroiled in a labour dispute, culminating last week in a "go slow" action that disrupted production at the site.

The action took place at the open pit portion of the project, with management forced to suspend activities in order to ensure that health and safety standards were observed and not to risk damaging the machinery.

However, as a Zimplats spokesman revealed today, no deal has yet been secured to bring an end to the dispute.

Zimplats has strived to offset any impact on production by bringing forward necessary maintenance work, but with the work finished Zimplats is now set to turn to its stockpiled ore.

"This stockpile will allow processing operations to continue for a few more days and it is therefore critical that a resolution to this industrial action be achieved as soon as possible," the company confirmed.

Ngezi's open pit produced 458,000 metric tons of ore containing platinum, palladium, gold and rhodium in the opening quarter up to March 31st.
