Zero emission racing planned by Formula Zero 22nd August 2006
In a bid to raise the public awareness of sustainable transport alternatives, the Dutch firm Formula Zero is to establish a competition that pits fuel cell vehicles against one another.
Designed to feature at major motor shows and conventions, the company is working on a 600-metre track complete with a grandstand for 1,500 spectators, hospitality suites and pits that can all be disassembled and rebuilt on any flat surface, Gizmag reports.
The pits will boast hydrogen-generating facilities and cleaning technology to ensure the competing vehicles – which resemble go karts – remain emission free.
Formula Zero is mooting the Paris Air Show, the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Michelin Challenge Bibendum as potential events at which to showcase its scaled-down hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
With aid from corporate sponsors, Formula Zero is expected to kick off in 2008 and is due to expand to full scale vehicles as technology progresses.
Contrasting other zero emission events, which award fuel efficiency, this is a celebration of speed and innovation designed to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen as a fuel for the near future.
