Worker dies at Anglo Platinum's Amandelbult mine 16th September 2008

Anglo Platinum confirmed yesterday (September 15th) that a worker has died at its Amandelbult mine.

Simon Tebele, spokesman for the South African company - which is the world's largest platinum producer - said that the miner died at 01:00 on Monday morning.

Mr Tebele also explained that he could not provide any additional information in relation to whether production had been affected or whether the mine would be shut down.

Responding to the news, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) warned Anglo Platinum that it expects it to "pull up its socks" as the death is the sixth recorded at the mine so far this year.

The NUM has previously advised workers to stay away from South African mines following such deaths, while the government regularly shuts down operations to investigate safety and possible repairs.

The latest death follows the declaration last week that another miner was killed at the company's Lebowa platinum mine and takes the total number of worker deaths in 2008 to date to 121.
