Wildfire troubles Stillwater again 14th September 2006

The wildfire which caused disruption to Stillwater Mining's operations last week has again forced the company to close its East Boulder mine.

Stillwater announced on Wednesday evening that it again had to suspend operations at the East Boulder mine because of the spreading fire.

Although the company stressed that the mine itself was in no danger of being hit by the fire, an evacuation order has been issued along the main access route to the facility, meaning the safety of employees to and from the mine could not be guaranteed.

The fire is now largely contained, Stillwater added, but on Wednesday it spread north and west, endangering the mine's access road.

Earlier in the month, Stillwater was forced to close the mine for five days due to smoky conditions on the access route caused by the wildfire, and it remains to be seen whether the disruption will have any significant impact on the company's annual production forecast.
