Volkswagen (VW) has announced its intention to fit a new particulate filter to some of its diesel cars,

VW is intending to use technology company Corning's new DuraTrap AT filter on a number of diesels.

Production of the Golf, Golf Plus and Touran models with this particulate reducing device has already begun.

The news comes as VW is considering a switch to common-rail technology for its European diesel cars.

The German manufacturer intends to drop its Pumpe-Duese, or pump nozzle, fuel management system for its new line of three and four cylinder diesel engines in 2007.

VW decided it would be impossible to adapt the old technology with the new particulate filters needed to meet tougher emission laws planned by the European Union.

The latest common-rail systems are cheaper to make than Pumpe-Duese and can better handle the injection cycle of diesel particulate filters.
