Vertu combines diamonds with platinum 20th October 2005

Nokia's Vertu, the high-end mobile producer, is preparing to ship the first of its new range of diamond-encrusted handsets next week.

Just in time for Christmas, Vertu is launching its newest range of mobile phones for the more discerning customer, including handsets made with platinum and decorated with diamonds.

Only 200 of the handsets are being produced, with the most expensive believed to be worth an estimated £50,000.

Many of the most expensive mobiles are pre-sold, however Vertu's cheaper end of the market – at a mere £3,000 per handset – will be available for those looking for a unique Christmas present.

The demand in the market for a luxury item such as a jewel-encrusted, platinum made mobile phone highlights the increasing demand among consumers for commodities to be produced in platinum.

Increasingly seen adorning top female celebrities, from sports stars to screen sirens, platinum jewellery is in high demand and Vertu looks set to ensure that such a trend continues this Christmas.
