Vehicle emission bill launched in US 4th April 2007
Members of the US Congress are being urged to pass a new bill that would require automakers to significantly reduce emissions from their vehicles.
According to Green Car Congress, the legislation would also involve automakers lowering the amount of greenhouse gases produced by vehicles by 30 per cent over the next nine years, with these levels being tightened every five years.
"Reducing emissions from the use of motor vehicles must be a top priority," said Senator Dianne Feinstein, who co-introduced the measure. She added that the automotive sector alone "produces 32 per cent of all US greenhouse gas emissions."
In addition to lowering the amount of harmful emissions produced by a vehicle, the bill would call for the increase in the use of lower-carbon sources such as the development of fuel cell vehicles.
