The US Mint has produced a limited-edition platinum coin set as part of a special series which celebrates the institutions and traditions of the country's democracy.

The Mintage of the American Eagle 10th Anniversary Platinum Coin Set has been issued to mark the decade-long existence of the American Eagle Platinum Coin Program.

Priced at $1,949.95 and limited to just 3,000 sets, which come in handsome mahogany boxes, the coins are likely to become much sought-after items among collectors worldwide since they are the first ever to feature a reverse proof coin.

The proof coin features a cameo image floating on a mirror-like background, while the enhanced reverse proof coin features a frosted background and a brilliant, mirror-like finish on the raised elements of the coin.

Both coins bear the image of Lady Liberty, the American Eagle and the inscriptions 'Liberty', 'In God We Trust' and 'E Pluribus Unum" and are the second designs in a three-year series entitled The Foundations of American Democracy.

The sets go on sale on December 13th.
