Toyota to 'terminate fuel cell partnership' 24th February 2006
Toyota and General Motors are to end their research partnership on fuel cell-powered vehicles, according to reports today.
March is to mark a close to the agreement that dates back to 1999, but other areas of cooperation will continue until 2008.
The report in the Asahi Shimbun says that the two companies did not feel it necessary to develop the technology, saying that it is around a decade away from commercial production. Disputes over patent disclosure agreements were also cited as reasons for ending joint research into green engine technology.
The Japanese motor firm already enjoys environmental-friendly success with its Prius as the market for greener vehicles increases, with sales struggling to meet demand.
Speculation by the Japanese paper mentioned that Toyota may still push ahead with fuel cell research with another partner.
General Motors already has partnerships with BMW and DaimlerChrysler to work on hybrid engines, so the news does not announce a complete departure from the green engine market for the US giant.
