Toyota tests hydrogen prototype 26th November 2004

Japanese automotive giant Toyota has confirmed it is to test a prototype futuristic, eco-friendly hybrid transit system as part of the on-site transportation for the 2005 World Expo in Aichi, Japan.

Known as the Toyota Z-Capsule, the innovative system is a dual mode train/bus fuel cell hybrid that claims to offer a significant step forward in the development of clean vehicular technology.

The fuel efficient system is operated through motors powered by high-pressure hydrogen-supplied fuel cells, complemented by a nickel-metal hydride secondary battery, providing a low emission, quieter driving experience.

The technology is based on Intelligent Multimode Transport Systems (IMTS) which allows the fitted buses to drive unmanned and automatically on dedicated roads lined with embedded magnetic markers, as well as allowing human drivers to drive on ordinary roads.

The Z-Capsule technology has been developed through a joint project between Toyota and the 2005 EXPO in Aichi, with both sides working towards increasing the public's awareness of the use and efficiency of fuel cell vehicles.
