Third German fuel cell sub delivered 24th April 2006

The third fuel cell-powered submarine has been handed over to the German government's office for defence technology and procurement.

The submarine, called U 33, is the third of four fuel cell-powered vessels to be completed by German constructor, ThyssenKrupp Marine System.

Known as Class 212A submarines, they function by using an air-independent propulsion system using a hydrogen fuel cell.

Fuel cell technology has significantly changed the capabilities of submarines. The new vessels can stay submerged beneath the surface of the ocean for weeks at a time, while those powered by conventional diesel-electric engines have to resurface every couple of days to refuel.

On top of that, the fuel cell engine makes little noise and gives off no exhaust heat, improving the stealth of the submarines.

The first two boats were delivered in September of last year, while completion of the final one is due for the end of the year.
