Tata plans hydrogen vehicle 22nd November 2007

Tata Motors has announced that it is planning to develop and launch a new prototype hydrogen vehicle within the next 12 months.

The company, which is India's largest automobile manufacturer, has teamed up with space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to develop what they hope will be the world's cleanest vehicle, running on hydrogen and creating only water as a waste product.

G Madhavan Nair, Chairman of the ISRO, commented on the initiative: "We are working with Tata to see how best the proto model can be put on the road by next year."

The work on the scheme has already begun and the proposed vehicle would use the ISRO's rocket technology.

"Hydrogen and atmospheric oxygen will combine together in the fuel cell and electricity will be produced," Mr Nair added, explaining how the vehicle will be powered.
