Taiwan to top LCD production 19th January 2006

Taiwan is set to become the world's premier producer of thin film transistor (TFT) LCD screens in 2006, it has been claimed.

According to reports from CENS, Eugene A Verdon Jr, president of LCD manufacturer Corning Display Technologies, has claimed that production of the flat screen panels in Taiwan will overtake the current world production leader, South Korea.

A number of companies, including Mr Verdon's Corning, are stepping up production in Taiwan over the coming 12 months, as demand for LCD screens is expected to continue to grow.

Mr Verdon commented that Taiwan's growth in the LCD sector has largely been down to some impressive expansion programmes from Taiwanese firms.

HB Chen, president and chief operating officer of AU Optronics, Taiwan's top TFT-LCD producer, has already stated that his firm is planning the development of three new panel facilities in the country, while Chunghwa Picture Tubes is planning to create two new facilities, beginning on April 1st this year.

Meanwhile, the Taipei Times reports that Hsu Mei-wen, a senior researcher at the Market Intelligence Center, has told delegates at a seminar in Taipei that LCD manufacturers need to break into new and emerging markets as they push their production programmes into a higher gear.
