Taiwan 'to take a third' of LCD production 24th January 2006

It has been claimed that Taiwan will account for nearly a third of all LCD production over the coming 12 months.

According to a Taiwanese government website, the country's Market Intelligence Centre believes that the companies currently working in Taiwan to produce LCD screens will increase their market share from 28.4 per cent in 2005 to 31.1 per cent this year.

That growth is expected to come from companies expanding their operations as demand for LCD panels in items from PDAs to laptops, but increasingly in televisions, continues to surge.

The claim follows comments made by Eugene A Verdon Jr, president of Corning Display Technologies, who suggested that LCD manufacturers in Taiwan will help the country overtake current world leader South Korea in terms of LCD panel production in 2006.

AU Optronics has already committed itself to building three new panel facilities in Taiwan, while Chunghwa Picture Tubes is planning to create two new facilities in the country later this year.
