Sylvania Resources announced yesterday (28th October) that its pgm production increased by 36 per cent in the third quarter of 2009.

The South Africa-focused company saw output reach 5,558 oz in the three months to 30th September, compared with the figure of 4,074 oz recorded in the preceding quarter.

In addition, record quarterly pgm production of 2,443 oz was attained at Sylvania's Millsell operations near Rustenburg, with 912 oz of output in September alone.

"The results of this quarter have proved positive for the company," it stated.

"Our plants have continued to operate profitably and our production rate has increased by 36 per cent from the previous quarter, something which we feel is a solid achievement."

Meanwhile, output at the Steelport flotation plant in Mpumalanga reached 2,267 oz and at the nearby Lannex facility - which is still being commissioned - production hit 413 oz.

The company is mainly attributing the production increases to plant availability of over 92 per cent and a head grade of 2.12g/t, up significantly from 1.56g/t in the June quarter.

Other highlights in the financial results include plant feed rising to 193,671 tonnes, while feed grade hit an average of 3.30 g/t pgm and plant recovery fell slightly to 38.9 per cent.

Sylvania Resources announced last week that its planned merger with Ruukki Group has been terminated.
