Swiss government to up clean air plans 17th January 2006
Switzerland is set to increase its efforts to tackle the level of emissions in its atmosphere, environment minister Moritz Leuenberger has announced.
According to Swissinfo, Mr Leuenberger has unveiled a raft of new measures designed to reduce emissions, including the adaptation of public transport diesel buses to bring them into line with international standards and reduce the harmful emissions that they produce.
Penalties for vehicles which produce more than a set amount of emissions could also be introduced and incentives for motorists to change to more efficient and lower-emission vehicles may also be brought in by the Swiss government.
Similar plans have already been introduced in other countries, most notably in some states across the US, where tax breaks have had a big impact on sales of low emissions vehicles, such as Toyota's hugely successful Prius hybrid.
Mr Leuenberger is also keen to bring in the requirement for all new diesel vehicles to be compulsorily fitted with particle filters to further reduce emissions.
