Striking platinum mine staff return to work 15th November 2007

Striking platinum mine workers affiliated to JIC Mining Services are to return to work, following the resolution of a pay dispute.

The 10,000 mine construction staff downed tools on Sunday in protest over how their salary increases were negotiated and working conditions.

However, following negotiations between union representatives and JIC executives, the workers will resume work on Thursday morning after three-days of industrial action, Ecliff Tantsi, Spokesman for the National Union of Mineworkers has said.

Mr Tantsi said that agreement was reached that the workers will now be paid a minimum wage of R1,800 per month and will receive improved medical benefits.

JIC also agreed to re-employ workers who has been sacked following an earlier strike.

In separate statements issued on Monday, Anglo Platinum and Impala Platinum announced that production at their operations was unaffected by the industrial action.
