Stoppage at Impala Platinum mine 16th February 2007
South African mining company Impala has reported a workers strike at their operation in the North West province.
Most of the workforce has laid down their tools in protest over medical service allowances, the company reports.
Discussions between the management of Impala and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will begin on Monday 19th February.
Impala is not against the demands made by the workers and hopes to resolve any issues at the meeting on Monday.
A company statement said: "Management and the NUM have appealed to employees to resume work as soon as possible."
They said that further information would be released when the management and the union had reached a mutually acceptable decision.
Impala Platinum is the primary operation of the Implats group and has 13 operational shafts covering an area of 260 square km.
The company produced 1,125 oz of platinum last financial year and plans to produce between 1.1 and 1.2 million oz a year within the next 30 years.
