STMicroelectronics harnesses platinum power 16th November 2004
STMicroelectronics has unveiled a new line of platinum-based ultra-fast high voltage diodes for use in lighting and power conversion applications.
The firm says that its medium-current diodes, which are built with a planar, platinum-doped silicon, offer the optimum performance.
Handling voltages that can range from between 800 and 1200V, and also small currents of 1 to 3A, the devices are said to offer the best possible component composition.
STMicroelectronics says that the diodes boast the optimum ratio of forward voltage drop (VF) to leakage current (IR).
Platinum is used in the new diodes in place of gold, reducing leakage current by a factor of around 100 and providing greater efficiency.
The use of the pgm in the system also enables the diodes to operate at a maximum temperature of 175 degrees Celsius.
