South African pgm production rises in Q3 2010 11th November 2010
PGM production in South Africa increased slightly on a year-on-year basis during the third quarter of 2010, it emerged today (11th November).
Figures published by Statistics South Africa revealed that output of the metals rose by 5.3 per cent, contributing to overall mining production jumping by 6.9 per cent.
In the same three-month period, coal production was up by 2.2 per cent and iron ore production dipped by 0.6 per cent.
The data also showed that country-wide mining output rose by 12.1 per cent on a year-on-year basis in September, with month-on-month production pushing 1.4 per cent higher.
In addition, the value of all minerals sold increased by 26.7 per cent in the three months ended August 2010, compared to the equivalent period in 2009.
South Africa currently plays host to many mining companies looking to exploit its rich natural resources, with the country providing more than three-quarters of the world's platinum supplies.
