South African pgm production down 4.3 per cent in August 9th October 2009

Pgm production in South Africa declined by 4.3 per cent on a year-on-year basis during August, according to new figures released yesterday (8th October).

Official data from Statistics South Africa revealed that pgms contributed to the overall decline of 5.8 per cent in seasonally-adjusted total mining production for the month.

The total mining output drop was recorded as 11.5 per cent, with gold production shrinking by 2.9 per cent and non-gold output seeing a fall of 12.7 per cent.

In addition, the group revealed that the value of mineral sales for the three months to the end of July 2009 slumped by 32.5 per cent, with pgms registering a 17.8 per cent decrease.

The other contributors to the quarterly sales drop were coal and manganese, which saw decreases of 5.8 per cent and 5.1 per cent respectively, although iron ore sales improved.

Statistics South Africa also confirmed that the total value of mineral sales fell by 29.4 per cent to R19.2 billion in July 2009 in comparison to the equivalent period 12 months earlier.
