Solidarity union call for fatal accidents to be reported to JSE 22nd October 2007
Mining accidents should in the future be reported to the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE), according to trade union Solidarity.
The organisation has called for the accidents to be reported to the JSE as a way to break the cycle of accidents and deaths at mines across the country.
Solidarity believes that the JSE's information service, known as SENS, should then be required to publicise the information on the accident just as it does any other financial information brought to its attention.
"The SENS notice, which will have to be sent within six hours after a fatal accident, must also include a brief summary of accidents in the company in question during the year to date. The proposal is aimed at making the safety plans of companies a reality, rather than empty talk," explained Solidarity spokesperson Reint Dykema.
Mr Dykema referred to the recent fatal accidents that have hit operations at Anglo Platinum's Paardekraal shaft and at Northam Platinum.
