Snoopy chooses platinum for anniversary 16th December 2005

Cartoon dog Snoopy is to be immortalised in platinum to celebrate the lovable character's 55th anniversary.

Japanese jewellery manufacturer IK has announced the creation of diamond-encrusted platinum Snoopy items designed to commemorate 55 years since the character first appeared in cartoon strip Peanuts.

IK has revealed that it will sell just ten of the items, with demand for the collectors' items expected to be very high, due to the popularity of the Peanuts comic strip, which now appears in newspapers all over the world.

The company will sell the 50mm figurines in Tokyo, for around £26,700 each, through Isetan's principal department store in the city.

Collectible platinum dolls are highly valuable as the high end of the jewellery market continues to favour the precious metal.

Last month a diamond-studded Hello Kitty figurine worth $100,000, created to celebrate the company's 30th year, was sold to a Japanese collector.
