Smopex reduces metal removal time 23rd February 2007
Johnson Matthey's Smopex scavenging system allows for the detection and removal of precious metals in solutions and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
The technology ensures that patient safety is not compromised and Smopex has a number of benefits, including the ability to carry out recovery of metal at high speeds.
Smopex is designed to remove precious metals at high speed from solutions and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
Mark Danks, Technical Specialist at Johnson Matthey Catalysts, explains: "Removal of metal from solution is dependent upon the solution chemistry (metal species, ligands, pH, solvents, other metals, temperature), but with Smopex the reaction is usually fast."
Speaking to In-PharmaTechnologist.com, Mr Danks added that there are also benefits other than speed: "We can add more cross-linker during the manufacturing process, this increases the thermal stability of the product and enables its use at up to 200 degrees Celsius - we typically recommend 120 to 130 degrees Celsius for standard products."
Four Smopex scavengers are currently on file with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
