Shutdown hits pgms output at Everest mine 29th November 2007

The enforced shutdown at Aquarius Platinum's Everest mine has cut output by around 2,000 oz of platinum group metals (pgms), it has been announced.

Aquarius Platinum ceased operations at the mine on Sunday following the death of rockdrill operator Tete Tlali in a landfall accident, with work re-commencing on Monday.

The one-day closure interrupted a series of subsequent shifts, however, with the shortfall in output unlikely to be made up during the quarter, a statement from Aquarius said.

News of the impact on production at the Everest mine comes a week after the miner was forced to close its Kroondal mine for five days - leading to a total loss of production of 4,000 oz of pgms, some 2,000 oz of which was attributable to Aquarius Platinum.

An announcement issued by Aquarius Platinum at the time indicated that this is also not expected to be made up over the course of the quarter.
