School buses to be fitted with platinum catalysts 19th October 2007
A Tennessee local authority plans to fit its school buses with platinum oxidisation catalysts in a bid to cut road pollution and improve air quality.
Shelby County proposes fitting 294 buses with the emissions-reducing technology at a cost of $400,000, commercialappeal.com reports.
Mike Carpenter, who serves on the County Commission, said: "This is a small piece of an overall strategy for Shelby County. I think clean air is a good use of taxpayer money."
The proposals have been approved by the County Commission this week, which will provide $80,000 of the funding required.
The rump of the money will be provided by the Shelby County's Migration and Air Quality fund.
News of the scheme follows the Environmental Protection Agency this week revealing that it is considering downgrading air quality in the area from 'marginal' to 'moderate'.
