Satraplatin trial gets go-ahead 19th May 2006

A trial is to begin to examine how GPC Biotech's platinum-based drug satraplatin can best be used in combination with another drug to treat patients with advanced cancer.

The phase I trial is being conducted in the US, at Northwestern University in Chicago.

It aims to find out the maximum dose of satraplatin when administered in combination with Xeloda.

"I am excited about the potential that the combination of satraplatin and Xeloda may hold. This oral-oral regimen, if effective, may offer doctors an important new, well tolerated and convenient treatment option for patients with a variety of cancers," said William Gradishar, who is leading the study.

The two drugs are used simultaneously for patients with advanced solid tumours. Around 24 patients are expected to be enrolled in the study.

Satraplatin is the company's lead drug candidate. Unlike other platinum-based treatments, now widely used to treat cancers, it can be taken orally. This allows patients to be treated at home.
