Samsung: LCD sales set to double by 2010 19th October 2005

The president of Samsung’s liquid-crystal display (LCD) division has reportedly predicted that the worldwide LCD television market will reach 100 million units by 2010, up from around 20 million this year.

Speaking at FPD International 2005, a flat panel display conference in Yokohama, Sang-Wan Lee told delegates that the global market for LCD panels would boom, as consumers increasingly demand high-end television sets and prices fall.

Mr Lee announced at the forum meeting that Samsung plans to introduce massive 100-inch screens and double annual sales to $20 billion (£11.4 billion) over the next five years.

"I believe the LCD TV market is quite capable of hitting 100 million," Reuters quotes Mr Lee as saying.

He added that the market for LCD TVs had grown faster than expected and predicted that the proportion TVs contributed to total LCD panel sales would grow from 17 per cent in 2005 to 42 per cent in 2010.

PC monitors and mobile handsets currently make up 40 per cent and 27 per cent of the LCD market, respectively, the Korea Times reports.
