Safety milestone achieved by Cosira 14th March 2008

Cosira International has achieved 973,145 working hours with a lost-time injury frequency rate of 0.21 at the concentrator on the PPRust North Expansion Project.

The firm confirmed that safety was not neglected in the R6 billion expansion at Anglo Platinum's Mogalakwena division, Mining Weekly reports.

Ranked as the biggest single-stream platinum concentrator in South Africa and one of the largest in the world, the project produces 600,000 t/m and has the biggest primary crusher even seen in the South African platinum mining industry.

"One of the challenges that Cosira faces is getting everyone on site and in the manufacturing facilities to understand that safe work practices have to become a lifestyle, and a reflex that is so entrenched that it becomes automatic," said Sakkie van Vuuren, Safety, Health Environmental, Risk and Quality Manager at Cosira.

"When one is fatigued or distracted at the end of a long day, those automatic reflexes will be what prevent a serious accident," he explained.

"At any time, the company will have several projects running on sites where there can be no tolerance for non-compliance," he added.
