Safety decision offers fuel cell opportunity 30th November 2006
A new specification defining the safety requirements for the transportation of hydrogen could herald a new era for the development of fuel cells.
The International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) has announced a new specification which will allow for the transport of long-lasting fuels such as hydrogen, meaning that mobile fuel cells could become more common in devices such as mobile phones and laptops.
Until now, it has been necessary for the relevant authority in each country to approve the transportation of hydrogen storage systems in and out of that country, making the transportation of hydrogen a slow and cumbersome process.
This has meant that the development of mobile fuel cells for small devices has been slow to take off due to the problems in attempting to move the necessary materials from country to country.
However, the ISO has now issued a new standard which will bring uniformity across the different authorities and also paves the way for the development of a new system to transport hydrogen.
