SA platinum strikes continue 4th October 2004

Strikes at Impala Platinum and Angloplat are today continuing after talks aimed at averting the action failed.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) vowed to continue the strikes following an unsuccessful meeting of the various parties on Friday.

The Daily Report claims mass meetings are planned today at the operations of both Angloplats and Impala in Rustenburg at which workers were expected to intensify their action. The unions claim the strike involves about 30 000 workers.

The NUM's Archie Palane said, "We are disappointed with management at both operations in that management refuses to disclose its wage bill and yet argues that our demands will affect the wage bill negatively.  We think it's time they showed an attitude that wants to end the strikes."

Implats has disclosed that the strike by 17 000 employees is costing the company R28 million a day.

Angloplat has not yet disclosed the financial impact of the strike on production, saying: "It is still early days."

Mike Mtakati, the spokesperson for Angloplat, said: "We will only be able to assess the impact of the strike if it drags beyond a week. The first two days had minimal effect on production as most workers turned up for work. The exceptions were refineries where many workers did not report for duty."
