Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat) said today (October 21st) that a strike over wages at its Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) could negatively impact production if an agreement cannot be reached soon.

The firm said members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) employed by JIC Mining Services, one of the largest mining contractors in South Africa, have been on a protected strike since Monday (October 17th).

Black-owned RBPLat said: "The industrial action, if prolonged, will impact on production for the duration of the strike, more specifically at BRPM's South Shaft."

The platinum group metals (pgm) miner stressed that it is "making every effort" to restore full production as soon as possible by bringing a swift end to the strike.

In August, RBPlat said it had concluded a "landmark" three-year wage agreement with the NUM. The firm also reported half-year 4E pgm production of 142,100 oz.
