Q4 sees strong growth in LCD panels 30th January 2008

The market for LCD TV panels showed strong growth in quarter four of 2007 as shipments rose by 18 per cent quarter on quarter and 70 per cent year on year to reach 27.9 million units.

Figures from DisplaySearch's 'Quarterly Large-Area TFT LCD Shipment Report' show the total TV panel shipments for 2007 to be 86 million units, up 58 per cent from a year ago.

DisplaySearch reported strong consumer demand for LCD TV sets as well as PC laptop displays.

Samsung Electronics had the largest share in the market, shipping 22.9 per cent and seeing 33 per cent growth with a 22.5 per cent share in the TV market as the firm sold $8.6 billion worth of TV panels during 2007.

Corning Incorporated also released their earnings for the fourth quarter and Jim Flaws, Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer, said that gross margins for the year were slightly up.

"For 2007 it will be obviously dependent on our ability to continue to hold the moderate price declines and a level of cost reduction," he told journalists in a conference call.
