Protesters arrested at Limpopo mine 2nd April 2003
Nine people have been arrested following a protest march outside the Morula Platinum mine in Driekop near Nelspruit today, according to Limpopo police.
Six men and three women were arrested for allegedly inciting public violence after around 100 marchers met to demand a response to a memorandum they handed over to the mine management two weeks ago.
Inspector Ntobeng Phala told 'Business Day' that the protestors were calling for job creation in the area, rehabilitation of local schools and the instalment of a water supply.
Phala said that the crowd proceeded to barricade the entrance and road leading to the mine, throwing stones at police vehicles.
'We only managed to apprehended nine of these people, who were also not known by the organisers of the march,' he commented.
