Production to recommence at closed Anglo Platinum's shafts? 24th October 2007
Anglo Platinum could reopen its mines today, it has been announced.
The company's Paardekraal operation at Rustenburg has been closed since Tuesday last week, following the death of a miner in a rockfall.
The suspension of operations is costing the company 1,300 oz of platinum group metals (pgms) per day.
However, according to Simon Tebele, spokesman for Anglo Platinum, a second meeting with officials from the Department of Minerals and Energy which took place yesterday could give the company the green light to recommence operations.
He told Mining Weekly yesterday: "If everything goes well, production at all three shafts could begin again tomorrow."
Operations at Northam Platinum's underground mine remain suspended, however, with spokesperson Marion Brower telling Mining Weekly that this is costing the firm an estimated 850-1,000 oz of pgms daily.
The mine was closed in the wake of a fatal accident on October 16th.
