PolyFuel awarded landmark fuel cell technology patents 16th April 2007

An American company specialising in developing engineered membranes for fuel cells has won two patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office in respect of its pioneering work.

The two broad patents will cover the technology and research involved in PolyFuel's scientific advances and go under the names Ion Conductive Block Copolymers and Sulfonated Copolymer.

The breakthroughs from PolyFuel, which this week inked an agreement to provide its technology to leading platinum catalyst converter manufacturer Johnson Matthey, are deemed to be of particular significance since membranes determine the efficiency of fuel cells.

Moreover, according to PolyFuel micro power fuel cells are tipped to become industry standard primary power sources in high-sales consumer technology fields such as smart phones and laptops.

Commenting on the award of the patents, PolyFuel President and Chief Executive Jim Balcom said: "In any new field, there are ultimately a few, benchmark patents from which much future technology springs.

"We believe that this is one of those situations and our investors and customers should be encouraged that we now have such key intellectual property protection in place, and are free to exploit our technology for the benefit of the industry."
