Platinum used in silicone gel for elastics 23rd January 2008

An elastics firm has developed a dermatologically safe adhesive silicone gel containing platinum which it is claimed makes elastic more durable and is more effective at keeping the fit of apparel.

According to manufacturers Stretchline, the Elastac coating, which has been designed for use in hosiery, lingerie and activewear in the Stay4sure range, is machine washable and has been proven to survive over 40 washes.

Tests conducted by the BSL BIOSERVICE Scientific Laboratories and by other independent sources also show that it has no adverse effect on the skin and on people with dermatological conditions, fibre2fashion.com reports.

A statement from the facility said that tests revealed "no reactions identified as sensitisation" and that "therefore the material is considered to have no sensitising properties".

Elastac also flexes and conforms to skin without obstructing the wearer's circulation, the company claims.

The gel contains no more than 10 parts of platinum per million and according to Stretchline "presents no hazards to man or the environment".
