Platinum used in new silicone rubber compound 6th August 2008
A new two-part platinum curing silicone rubber compound is simplifying the production of vacuum bags for large moulded parts.
The compound uses low viscosity and cures at room temperature in just a few minutes, without shrinking.
The product is being launched by Wacker Silicones and it is hoped that it will open up new routes for composite manufacturing.
Easier, more cost effective production is expected from the new product which is also expected to be constructed faster than the film technology which is traditionally used.
The new technology is able to increase the short pot life of the previous model by around 20 minutes and a special shear-thinning silicone elastomer formulation means it can be applied to vertical surfaces without dripping.
As a result, custom-made vacuum bags for use in boat building, racing cars and wind power generators can all be created.
Wacker Silicones is expected to present the ELASTOSIL C 1200 at Composites Europe, according to reports from the A to Z of Materials.
