Platinum top of SA exports 27th October 2006
Sales of platinum topped the list of South Africa's exports over the past 12 months, it has been revealed.
Platinum sales accounted for 13.8 per cent of all South African exports during the year, national treasury director general Letsetja Kganyago has announced.
Sales of the precious metal increased by 44.8 per cent over the course of the year, while exports of filtering or purifying machinery (centrifuges) also increased substantially, up by 35.5 per cent.
The director general was speaking to the South African national assembly portfolio committee members.
Gold was the second largest export with a nine per cent share of the market, which demonstrates the importance of platinum to the South African economy, leading the country's exports market by some way.
