A string of high profile celebrities have been showing off their platinum wares at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards in Miami in a glittering ceremony.

Icons of the music world such as Missy Elliot, Kanye West and Sean "Diddy" Coombs were joined by entertainment figures including host Paris Hilton.

Crowds welcomed the stars onto the so-called "White Carpet" at the awards, with platinum baubles by Sol Rafael and Jacob & Co. winning much attention.

Ms Hilton was wearing a platinum and 250 carat diamond necklace by Rafael estimated to be worth $2,500,000, while Missy Elliot showed off a platinum and 28 carat diamond ring when collecting her award.

Other pieces on show included a platinum and 100 carat diamond tennis style necklace by Ciara, as well as a platinum and pink diamond cross pendant necklace.

Kanye West showed off a platinum and canary yellow diamond cross from Jacob, while the hip hop star also sported a platinum and white diamond cross.

Platinum's prominence at the awards follows a well-worn path trod at red carpets in ceremonies around the world, with awards shows such as the Oscars and the Golden globes showcasing the latest jewellery trends.
