Platinum selling music star launches platinum watch range 20th April 2005
Music superstar and entrepreneur Jay-Z is to launch a new range of limited edition luxury watches in order to celebrate his tenth year in the music industry - again underlining the crossover of exclusivity and celebrity that is helping to drive parts of the luxury goods market.
The hip-hop star will offer watches in rose gold, platinum or stainless steel, working with Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piquet.
He told the New York Post: "I've always been a big fan of Audemars Piguet..."
Only 100 of the timepieces will be created, with rose gold and platinum the most exclusive, with only 30 and 20 made from each precious metal respectively.
The timepieces will range in price from $24,000 to $100,000.
To add even more style to the purchase, consumers who buy one of the limited watches will receive a specially engraved iPod with Jay-Z's albums already uploaded onto it.
The 35-year-old star co-designed all the items, picking Audemars Piquet for the brand's "quality and integrity".
The musician has long proved an astute businessman - launching clothing lines and even adding his name to brands of Vodka - with the latest effort expected to attract the high-end consumer.
