Platinum rings seal first civil partnership 19th December 2005

Britain's first gay couple to be legally recognised through a civil partnership ceremony chose to signify their commitment with the exchange of platinum rings.

The simple yet elegant rings were worn by Grainne Close and Shannon Sickles at the ceremony carried out at Belfast City Hall earlier today, reports the Times.

Ms Close and Ms Sickles are the first gay couple to "wed" under the new civil partnership laws and represent a significant turning point in the legal recognition of homosexual relationships, providing partners with employment, financial and pension protection.

Wearing the traditional colours of black and white, the couple took part in a 20-minute ceremony and, according to witnesses, exchanged the platinum rings with Dolly Parton playing in the background.

"We are delighted. Here's to many more," commented Ms Sickles, following the ceremony, while a friend described the registration as "moving and very emotional".

Around 687 civil partnership ceremonies are expected to take place on Wednesday, when the law comes in to effect in England, while all eyes will be on the undoubtedly stylish union of Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish.
