Platinum phone wings its way to Indian high fliers 30th November 2004

Vertu's luxury platinum-based mobile phone has hit the Indian market, aiming at executive high fliers and the jet set.

The lavish phone incorporates a sapphire crystal display and is adorned with platinum.

The body of the handset is made of titanium, while the edging is finished in leather, as manufacturers seek to transfer something of the glamour in the jewellery industry to the mobile phone market.

Developed by one of Nokia's leading designers, Frank Nuovo, the Vertu range is also available in stainless steel, gold and white gold.

The platinum pieces also come complete with a full concierge service at the touch of a button, as the phone is aimed squarely at an exclusive market.

Bollywood stars are rumoured to have already ordered the phone, following in the footsteps of US stars Madonna, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez.

With mobile phones proving a popular accessory, the attempt to marry the technology to the vogue for platinum jewellery is likely to prove appealing to many with the wealth to afford them.
