Platinum mining companies have confirmed the extent of the impact of yesterday's nationwide miners' strike in South Africa.

Anglo Platinum's output was cut by 9,000 oz, according to spokesperson Simon Tebele, who added that the loss had already been considered in its adjusted expected output this year of between 2.45 million and 2.5 million ounces.

He said: "This one-day strike will have an impact equal to 9,000 oz of refined platinum, this amount had been included when we reduced the 2007 production forecast."

Meanwhile, Impala Platinum lost around 3,500 oz of platinum as a result of the industrial action, its Chief Executive Officer David Brown confirmed.

The strike had been instigated by the National Union of Miners in response to what it perceives as slipping safety standards in the mining sector.

Up to 250,000 mine workers downed tools for the strike, with protest marches taking place in Johannesburg.

News of the impact on Anglo Platinum's operations comes as it this week announced it is to purchase two gearless mill drive systems for $25 million to improve output at its mill at Mokopane.

It is hoped that these will help the world's largest platinum miner to double output at the mine.
