Platinum jewellery was out in force in Hollywood this week as stars gathered for the annual academy awards.

The Oscars ceremony saw some of the biggest names in film don platinum accessories from earrings and brooches to cufflinks and shirt studs.

Kate Winslet, Laura Linney, Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio were all seen sporting platinum.

The showing at the Oscars is being seen as further evidence that the precious metal is replacing its rivals on the wrists, fingers and ears of the great and good.

"Aside from its durability and rarity, celebrities love platinum because it's a naturally white metal, so it brings out the sparkle in diamonds, gem stones, and colourful ensembles," said Michael O'Conner of the Platinum Guild Association USA.

"Even if you're watching the show from home, you can't help but notice that Platinum jewellery adds glamour and sophistication to any red carpet outfit."
