Platinum Guggenheim 6th November 2006
Architect Frank Gehry has used platinum in his latest creation, for which he has employed the help of master craftsmen from jeweller Tiffany.
The man whose vision resulted in the magnificent Guggenheim museum in Bilbao has just finished his latest project - a miniature replica of that masterpiece made from platinum.
The platinum brooch is estimated to be worth around $1 million (£526,000) and is based on the original floor plan of the Guggenheim in Bilbao.
It took the craftsmen and Mr Gehry more than a year to develop the platinum brooch, which is encrusted with over 700 diamonds, despite being small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
Explaining his move into the jewellery sector, Mr Gehry commented: "The idea of designing jewellery has intrigued me for a long time."
Speaking to the Sunday Times, he also showed his enthusiasm for using platinum, adding: "You get to work with fantastic materials."
