Platinum Group Metals Ltd has announced is to go ahead with the underground development for the Project 1 Platinum Mine after winning regulatory approval from the South African Department of Mineral Resources (DMR).

The consent of the DMR was received behind schedule, the firm said, after a delay in the approval for the project's environmental management plan.

Despite the problems in its application, the project is still on budget, according to Platinum Group Metals.

The final mining right application and social and labour programme for the 275,000 oz/y WBJV Platinum Mine was filed by the company last week.

Platinum Group president R Michael Jones said the firm is "very pleased" with the recent progress on the project, adding that "major milestones" have been reached.

"We are now able to commence underground operations and we are in process for approval of our final mining right," he added.

In addition to DMR approval, the firm has completed a Surface Rights Purchase to create a 2,700 hectare "buffer" of land around the mine.

It has also finalised water infrastructure arrangements and signed an agreement with Eksom to supply the site with electricity.
