Platinum furnaces to be developed by Tenova Pyromet 15th August 2008
Two 3.7MW furnaces will be re-commissioned as part of a refurbishment at the Crocodile River Mine smelter and Tenova Pyromet has been appointed to oversee the operation.
The refurbishment will include upgrades to all of the concentrate receiving and furnace areas.
In addition, ten full-time engineers will undertake a six-month feasibility study and Tenova Pyromet is also expected to be used as the company moves into the execution phase.
Ender Vardar told Mining Weekly that the development would reduce capital costs and contribute to "offsetting the anticipated higher costs associated with the provision of adequate power supplies".
The news follows reports that Tenova Pyromet has been successful in its work with two furnaces operated by Tata 2.
Tenova Pyromet was responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of two submerged arc furnaces with a complex plant control system.
The Crocodile River Mine is located on the Bushveld Complex and currently produces about 125,000 oz of platinum group metals every year.
